Switzerland: expensive X.400 Customs standard replaced by SecureMail Guard

Public authorities basically specify the compliance with specific security standards for data transmission. For this purpose the Swiss Customs introduced the X.400 standard many years ago. This standard however required a separate leased line and thus involved considerable technical effort and was very expensive for logistics companies. XiCrypt managed to join up with Mercurio, a Swiss logistics software expert as partner in order to offer other Swiss companies the modern, cost-effective alternative of the XiCrypt SecureMail Guard technology. As a precondition for the successful market development, the Swiss Customs had to change over to the secure email standard S/MIME. After this change-over the cooperating partners managed to change over a further 32 logistics companies (by July 2004) to data encryption with digital signatures according to the XiCrypt concept in a very short time. This shows that the XiCrypt SecureMail Guard solution has also proved of value in Switzerland, even under the strict eyes of the Customs authorities.
